ההוראה ממ"ש [בשלישי דפ' כי תצא] "כי תבנה בית חדש ועשית מעקה לגגך וגו'": כשיהודי עובר לעבודה חדשה, "בית חדש", הנה כדי להיות בטוח שיוכל לעמוד מול הנסיונות בעבודה החדשה ושלא "יפול הנופל", עליו להעמיד לעצמו "מעקה" של "עשר טפחים" – להגדיר א"ע באופן חדש בכל עשר כחות נפשו. ועפמ"ש בגמ' עה"פ "ובנית ביתך" 1) זה גמרא 2) מעשים טובים 3) דרוש וקבל שכר, נמצא ד"עשיית מעקה" וזהירות זו צ"ל (לא רק כשהעבודה חדשה היא בעניני חול, אלא) אפי' במי שלומד תורה ע"מ להבין ולהשיג (גמרא), כדי לשמור שהשכל לא יוביל אותו בדרך עקלתון עד ש"יפול הנופל". ואפי' כשעוסק ב"מעשים טובים". ואפי' מי שלומד תורה באופן של "דרוש וקבל שכר" לעת"ל, דרגא הכי נעלית, צריך גם את "עשיית המעקה" והזהירות לשמור על כל עשר כחות נפשו! וזה שמברכים על עשיית מעקה מוכיח שדבר ברור שיש לכ"א הכח לזה כו'.

The verse states (in shelishi of Parashas Ki Seitzei), “When you build a new house, you shall make a guardrail for your roof…”: When a Jew moves takes on a new service (“a new house”), he must put up a “guardrail” to protect himself, so that he will be able to withstand the challenges of his new mission (“so that the one who falls will not fall”). And the guardrail must be ten tefachim high – protecting all ten faculties of the soul. The Gemara offers three interpretations of the verse “…you shall build your house”: (1) it refers to studying Gemara; (2) it refers to good deeds; (3) it means “expounding [upon Torah] and receiving reward.” Accordingly, a guardrail is necessary not only when the “new house” is in the mundane realm; rather, even when someone begins to study Gemara (learning to understand and grasp), he must put up a guardrail to ensure that his intellect doesn’t lead him astray, and similarly when it comes to good deeds. Moreover, even someone who learns Torah on the highest level “expounding and receiving reward” in the future (i.e., he isn’t concerned with what he gains from it now) – he, too, needs a guardrail to protect all ten faculties of his soul. And the fact that we are obligated to make a bracha upon putting up the guardrail indicates that one obviously has the power to do it etc.
